    The discussions in 2019 that reached the xlogosphere, media, streams and nets this year summer about the real actual plausible accidence-overload of humanity, and the collapse of humanity into a worldwide, eternal somalia model (or worse, total eradication of all life down to deep tectonic bacteria) has scared people into action. We are seeing a video on Google of a pretty credible doomsday cult who bought a Hyperion, had in towed down a salt mine in some undisclosed remote location, are digging space for habitats, seed storage, greenhouses, an underground arcology more than a kilometer in geologically stable earth layer and are planning to seal the entrance with 18 meter of poured reinforced concrete as soon as real shit hits the fan. I hear projections for this arrangement would be stable and sustainable with somewhere between 800 and 2000 people for decades. And worse, they have support of a wellknown PV-billionaire now. Wjhat they don't tell on Google is the secret strangelove bit - very rich men in their forties paying for underground apartments overlooking underground hydroponic gardens with 6 bedrooms adjacent to theirs. The worrying bit is the more credibility the idea of existential dangers will get the more really rich people will start burning valuable resources on these exit plans. At some time, maybe ten, fifteen years from now, they might even place all their bets on their schemes. Might civilization be continued in a few dozen underground communes for the worst years of a global collapse - or do projects like these drain away precious resources from actually saving the world itself?

    Should be putting it into orbit. Get all the eggs out of the basket, and into the asteroid belt. At least there is lots of resources there.

    Gods if we could still afford a space program we might make it as a species. I\\\'d be in the line to leave for Ceres tomorrow. Give me a Vacuum Rush and resources to last out there in the outer solar system and I\\\'ll say \\\"screw this world and let it die\\\".

    Very plausible. Is the earth's mantle going to become the new Dubai?
