21st Century Ideas: The look like idiots - Kids playing wargames in park.

With their big 3D goggles, waving and screaming and all.

I was taking a sponsor out for a walk, old guy in his 90s, a bit out of touch. He is the kind that complained when they introduced mobile phones, he didn't get the internet, and by now he has been in a steady state of annoyance for years but he reached a boiling point yesterday in the park. It was pretty empty, a bit cold but very sunny. We watched some swans, and across on a big field kids were playing a AR game. So the old man barked. "look there, those kids, what the hell are they doing". I looked. I saw seven or eigh urchins, around 13-15, with big bulbous silvery headsets on. New stuff. Two watching for snatchers left and right near the bicycle paths. The kids, wooted in oddly shrill voices, ran back and forth reacting to invisible stuff. "Looks like they are playing a wargame". The old man grumbled, visibly agitated, prompting me for an explanation we both knew was going to piss him off more. "Look, do you wear those goggles?" I asked. He protested "give me a splitting headache" he said. I nodded. Most people our age cant stand them. Takes ages to get used to the view. "well it's just the kids see a wargame around where they stand, can be science fiction, can be fantasy. Looks like it's fantasy. Look at the one in red, he's reacting to something, probably a dragon." The old guy started muttering angrily. He's been doing it for half a century now. Kids playing wargames in the park. Augmented reality games. He didn't get it. The whole idea was over his plausibility horizon. His brain short cirquits thinking about it, he rejects it and in doing so he categorically rejects anyone who does it.

video games that combine fantasy world action with physical acitivy seems good to me. whats wrong with it?

Best guess? People dislike what they do not understand. Social and personal inertia are issues we're going to have to address before we can get things done.

Oh fiddlesticks - they gave kids a hard time in the 50's, the 1950's for reading comic books. Some people are just cranks.

So much for each new generation having an increased ability to roll with new next-gen technologies than the previous generation... :/
