With the Exiles moving towards urban centers, and the fossil fuel situation growing worse, what strategies can be employed to keep goods and services in urban and rural areas circulating?

I've got a struct about transit going here: http://www.superstructgame.org/SuperstructView/254 Also, I'm interested if anyone knows about city development or layout that may help address these concerns?

Find the Disney cartoon movie about the future. Megacities will grow and become common place. Expect cities segments to grow in rings. Transportation through the rings will be key. Some expect underground tubes as a possible way for the movement of things. Supertrains above the ground will move people.

    Bicycles!

Some of us intent to ride our horses.

I do not think bigger is the way to go. If you get smaller, you can do more for the community you have. The more self sustaining you community is, the less you have to travel out of it. Fuel is so expensive now that any travel has to be approved by the community council. And when we do travel into Columbus, we make sure we have everything we need for several weeks. We even try to supplement the fuel we do get with biofuel from excess crops and plant materials we cannot use. Kudzu, once the bane of existence for farmers, is a good source of biofuel. Medicine is also hard to get, so we focus more on staying healthy in the first place. And all of the exercise from riding bikes helps.

Back in the mid-2000's, a company developed a personal transit system that ran suspended from elevated monorails. There was no driver. The passenger would get into the car, tell it where he/she wanted to go, and it would proceed there automatically. Not only was it solar-powered by arrays mounted above the track, it was a net energy producer during the day. They couldn't find any takers.
