why don't we invest in space travel to get to other planets

The world is not in good shape. Wars, disease and poverty are just some of the problems we face today. Now and in the future, we will have to think of sensible solutions to these problems. However, the solution isnt leaving it all behind to go to other planets. And how would we decide who gets to go. Space travel is extremly expensive and to have the entire population go to some far off planet would be out of the question. Would we think of some form of medium to decide who was important enough to go to other planets, leaving others behind (which by the way would create tons of other problems e.g. bribery) with no government. You must think about what we would become, after trashing a planet, leaving all unperfect remnants behind, then just moving on. Would this create a trend for future generations to continue on with. Even if this isnt good enough for you, it would just cost too damn much.

Realistically, colonising another planet is a long way off. Even if it was a solution to our problems, which it isn't, it's still very much science fiction.

Yes, I know that NASA just announced that after some setbacks, the first manned mission to build the Armstrong Outpost on the moon will happen in April next year. As good as this is, we still don't have the technology to send humans any further away from Earth than we did in the 60s.

The american GOVERNMENT space program is dead. The Private nevada Rothblatt flyby mission proceeded last week in case you missed it despite total media blackout and a lot of ridiculing from the far right. The Chinese have serious plans to mine He3 on the moon, and the Russians have a developed plan to mine NEAR asteroids for platinum. Anyone who still doesn't get that all this will be critical in saving our civilization needs to stop inhaling NASCAR alcohol exhaust fumes. If we do not have a permanent, independent scientific/industrial engineering presence in L4/L5 by 2050, humanity will be toast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_power_satellite

no i am saying that we find a way to travel through space we could use the sun but it would require a huige amount of metal

Chances for humanity to be toast by 2050 are already slim as they are, given the slow Superthreat convergence. As a side note, I'd like to point that space programs aside, planet terraforming programs are, if theoretically possible - and even more realistic than they were, say, 10 years ago - they are still very likely to require the collaboration of the international community. As it took a whole planetary population to compromise the Earth ecosystem, it would also take a tremendous economical, political and ideological effort to push our ressources all the way to terraforming then colonizing a planet, and the process is most likely to take much longer than whatever time we seem to have right now. Such an effort, only arising from a danger threatening all of humanity - or from having survived such a danger by uniting ourselves to find solutions. I do not see terraforming then colonizing Mars or another planet as finding a solution. Instead, I see it as running away from our problems - something the 2008 theaters hit Wall-E depicted very aptly.

Aether Runners understand the dilemma inherent in the system. How could we spend resources on space program when so many are suffering? We can because we have to. If we fail here then we fail forever. If we are able to transplant people to other planets then we have a chance at furthering the species. How do we do this and still be ethical? Why not use the tech we have now and future tech from open source such as Open Scientists? Several Superstructs have advocated open source so lets use it and any donated resources. Meanwhile we can Help other Superstructs such as H2O which advocate underwater colonies a important step to space colonization and can alleviate the crush on the planet now. Resource management needed on ships can help on recycling here on Earth.

Good luck with colonizing other planets. Truth is - Antarctica is more habitable, warmer and has more water than Mars. Maybe we should all migrate there?

You Martians seem to be forgetting from whence we all originated!

My point exactly why haven't we colonized Antarctica? Its a first step and it could be used to alleviate other problems such as farming problems or over population. The real problem is how to we help the human species in the future in case its an event we have no hope to alleviate. Such as asteroid hit or irreversibility climate change. In these cases we have to think about how to live in an environment that has no advantages to the human species.

Most people alive in 2019 do not realize that we could solve most of the world's problems in 20 years, if humanity worked together and create permanent settlements and industries in lagrange points. However people will not get this give, no matter what I argue, so I have simply given up long ago.

Tell me about it its so Geocentric. Energy, living Space, material, farmland, and scientific breakthroughs can come through the off planet stations.
